NC travel HOT TIP! Here’s a great offbeat event “down east” in Wilmington, North Carolina. Head to downtown Wilmington for ChowdaFest — Saturday, November 8, in Historic Downtown, 12:00 Noon. It’s a local, colorful celebration of all things chowder. As they say, How’dya Like Ya Chowda? Hot clam chowder on a cool fall afternoon sounds like the ingredients for a popular festival in these parts. As a matter of fact, the Sixth Annual ChowdaFest serves up three kinds of clam chowder on the patio behind Fat Tony’s Italian Pub at 131 N. Front Street in downtown Wilmington.

Moore County NC Fox Hunting

This is a colorful tradition in Moore County, North Carolina that you might want to check out. No foxes are killed, I assure you. But what you do get is great pageantry — beautiful horses, hounds and riders doing their upscale thing across the bucolic Moore County countryside. It’s going to be held this year on Thursday, November 27.  Yes, Thanksgiving Day. Why not something different before you dive into that turkey dinner? The Moore County Hounds will start aapproximately 9:30 a.m. Understandably, hunting with the pack is by invitation only. However, as spectators you and I may watch on opening day. The event will be held at Hobby Field off Youngs Road in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

High Point NC Spookywoods A Review

OK. I did it. I felt I owed it to our NC Travel Guide Blog readers. My wife and I went to Spookywoods at Kersey Valley Farms, the award-wining haunted attraction near High Point and ArchdaleNorth Carolina. The owner, Tony Wohlgemuth, was there to greet us. Great guy. He has created a spectacular special effects extravaganza that places his spellbinding haunted venue in the top ten in the entire country. And now I know why. Take your kids and go — not the young ones, however. It’s intense. But fun. The costumes and Hollywood-style makeup are well done. This alone is worth the price of admission. Tony and his band of spookmeisters have created an elaborate 55 acre setting replete with creepy old outbuildings, dark foreboding woods, and a dizzy haunted maze filled at every turn with lifelike ghouls, creatures and demented freaks. Yike.

And that’s not all. Be sure to catch Jonathan Frost’s highly entertaining Magic Show. Don’t miss the razor blade ingestion trick. See if you can figure out how Jonathan pulls this off.  Spookywoods, Kersey Valley Farms near High Point, North Carolina. Our NC Travel Guide Blog strongly recommends Spookywoods. We give it five pitchforks.

I suggest you call for dates and times: 336.821.9999. Advance tickets: 336.285.0548. You can purchase your tickets in advance online or by phone.

Spookywoods is the only haunted attraction in North Carolina that is a member of AmericaHaunts.com, the world’s most successful haunted attractions.

Charlotte NC Celebrates Scanfest

Is Charlotte, North Carolina a melting pot or what? Here’s a festival you may not have heard about; I know I never have. It’s called Scanfest of the Carolinas and is slated this year for November 8. No, it’s not a festival celebrating efficient document management. Rather, this is an exciting bit of Scandinavia dropped right in our backyard. Scanfest is a celebration of all things Scandinavian. Scanfest was founded in 2003 as a way to share the cultures and customs of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. You can head to Charlotte rather than Oslo or Helsinki and visit a real Viking Village. Plus, there are all kinds of colorful events and unique food to sample. If you’re looking for something offbeat to do try Scanfest. I would also suggest it’s a great cultural learning experience for the kids.
